What is root canal treatment?
Root canal treatment is a procedure that removes infected tissue from inside a tooth and its surrounding areas. It targets the inner passages between the pulp and the roots, often necessitating the removal of the nerve and pulp. This usually alleviates tooth pain, though discomfort in the surrounding areas may persist. Common reasons for needing a root canal include decay from poor dental hygiene, cracks, chips, or disease. Symptoms often indicate the need for treatment, with chronic pain—exacerbated by eating, pressure, and temperature changes—being the most prominent. Other signs include a small bump on the gum, tenderness, swelling, and tooth darkening.
How does root canal treatment work?
Root canal treatment typically occurs in stages. The first session involves removing the pulp and nerve, while a second session focuses on sealing the cavity to prevent further infections.
- Diagnosis: Your dentist will take an X-ray to assess the infection and determine if an extraction is necessary.
- Anaesthetic: The tooth and surrounding gums are numbed, often requiring multiple injections. A rubber sheet is placed around the tooth to keep it dry.
- Drilling: The dentist drills a small hole to access the tooth’s inner structures.
- Removal: Using specialized tools, the dentist removes the nerve and pulp through the hole. After the infection is cleared, a temporary filling is applied, and a custom crown may be prepared. The filling usually consists of a rubber compound and standard filling material.
- Final stage: The final step involves placing a permanent crown, filling, or restorative agent. If any infected material remains, a third appointment may be needed for drainage.
- Ongoing care: Many people experience no further issues with their treated tooth.
While some discomfort is common during or after the procedure, most patients report minimal pain. It’s normal to feel nervous about this invasive treatment, but try to stay calm and still. You may experience unusual sensations and vibrations, which are part of the process. Root canal treatments are routine for dentists, and you can expect up to three sessions, although more may be needed if complications arise.
